Giving Back – Cabo Style!

November kicks off our “high season” social life with many exciting and fun events benefiting our worthy nonprofits in the months to come. It’s also a chance for visitors to mingle with Cabo society and experience the insider’s Los Cabos.

The Los Cabos Humane Society’s (LCHS) annual Gala fundraiser, Dressed to the K9’s, is coming on strong Friday November 11 at the Sheraton Grand Los Cabos. Considered the “seen and be seen” event of the fall season, this year’s attendees will indulge in fine French cuisine from Executive Chef Manuel de Luca, bid on silent auction items and enjoy a fashion show and stellar entertainment, all to help meet its annual fundraising goals.

Many visitors aren’t aware that the LCHS is privately funded and relies solely on donations to provide “SPCA” services. Its devoted staff and a cadre of dedicated volunteers provide spay-neuter clinics, animal advocacy and rescue, education, adoption, and shelter at its CSL Animal Center. The Center houses, on average, 70 dogs and 45 cats and performs spay/neuter mobile clinics throughout Los Cabos’ most marginalized neighborhoods. In 2015, the LCHS cared for over 3000 animals, performed 3,500 spay/ neuter surgeries, saw more than 400 adoptions and presented its Animal Awareness Educational Program to thousands of local students and families.

This year’s K9 theme is The Red and White Gala – A Night in Paris, with a French menu from the Sheraton’s acclaimed Executive Chef Manuel de Luca. Featured entertainment is LA “Nusoul” vocalist Jamila, with Kevin O’Neal. Jamila will perform “La Vie En Rose”, a special K9 adaptation of her much applauded tour, “A Musical Journey.”

If can’t make this year’s K9 but you’d like to help out, pet food, leashes and collars and good ol’ cash donations are always needed. Dog walkers are welcome early morning or late afternoon: It’s the perfect way to spend family or group time on the trails with a four-legged friend, or cuddle with a kitty in the cattery. If you love the links, Casa Hogar’s Fore the Boys (and soon to be girls) golf tournament is where you should be Saturday November 12. Held at Jack Nicklaus’ acclaimed Palmilla links with a 9:30 a.m. shotgun start, this is a chance to golf one of Los Cabos’ legendary courses for just $149 US. Your entry fee includes 18 holes of golf, breakfast and lunch, prizes and a raffle, with all proceeds to Casa Hogar.

Initially founded as a plan for a refuge for orphans and boys from troubled homes in 1990, Casa Hogar’s facility opened in CSL’s Reforma “Colonia” in early 2008. Providing a safe haven and set in a camp-like environment, in early 2017 it will soon expand next door with Phase 1 of the girls’ dormitories. Like most, the nonprofit receives no government assistance. The boys attend a combination of public, private and special education schools and in-house tutoring. Along with 24-hour care from a staff of 18, and a psychologist, they are readied for adoption or a return to their families. Girls will be integrated into the same very successful program.

Casa Hogar receives many visitors, from local volunteers to visiting individuals and groups looking to improve the lives of children, who no fault of their own, find themselves alone and needing a loving and nurturing environment. Executive Director Jayson Stirrup notes that the boys, through their education and life experiences, have a strong sense of giving back. The boys hosted an “Open House” this past October with invites to teachers, friends and local sponsors. With a modest entrance fee, they donated the proceeds to other local children in need.

“Casa Hogar Girls” will reunite sister siblings, who now see their brothers just monthly, and will provide the same care to orphaned girls in need. The goal is to provide for up to 40 girls and teens with the same advantages Casa Hogar has provided for these very fortunate boys.
